THE ART OF SELF CARE

2022’s Top Bathroom Trends

Self care is an essential element of our overall health and wellness, and something many of us strive to incorporate more regularly into our everyday lives. One of the easiest, most effective ways to increase our well being is by rethinking our bathroom design; even simple tasks like taking a shower can be elevated to spa status in a room that’s carefully crafted with luxury materials and thoughtful touches.

Back to Nature

2022’s biggest luxury bathroom trends lean heavily on the use of natural materials like wood and stone, creating a soothing and organic atmosphere - the perfect counterpoint to our hectic, tech-heavy lives. There are plenty of ways to integrate both wood and stone into your bathroom design, from gleaming hardwood floors and rustic reclaimed oak countertops to accent walls constructed with locally sourced granite, limestone or travertine. Increase the coziness factor by incorporating a fireplace within the stone wall (or simply include a recessed nook for candles). Skylights are another growing trend in luxury bathrooms. These multitasking design elements elevate the atmosphere of your bathroom several ways: in addition to providing abundant natural light (particularly in interior rooms that don't have windows), they make smaller spaces appear more airy and expansive. Venting skylights also bring a bit of nature into the bathroom, in the form of cooling breezes that help regulate your overall room temperature. Plants offer another effective way to bring the beauty and serenity of nature into your bathroom. Choose varieties that thrive in higher humidity, and bear in mind how much l ight your bathroom gets. Potted bamboo is a good choice and imparts a tropical, spa-l ike vibe, whi le a hanging basket of ivy provides an ethereal, Engl ish garden-style atmosphere.

Calm Colors and Lighting Your bathroom should be a place of relaxation and inspiration, and proper use of color is one of the most effective ways to achieve that goal. Incorporate subtle yet inspiring hues to emulate the look and feel of your favorite day spa. Warm earth or sand tones and variations of dove gray create a soothing effect, especially when paired with burnished copper hardware; pale, creamy yellow looks stunning against white tile. Likewise, lighting plays an important part in setting the overall mood of a room, and Kohler has upped the ante with their Veil Collection of bathroom products, which are programmed to match the level of light they display to your body’s circadian rhythms. That doesn’t mean you should completely avoid mixing in some bold contrasts here and there. A brightly colored vanity can really pop in a neutrally hued room. Even small accents, like colorful towels and bathmats or a rose-gold skincare fridge, add a sophisticated focal point to your space.

Your bathroom should be a place of relaxation and inspiration. " "

Retro Appeal

Pushing the Boundaries Don’t be afraid to think outside the box when designing your bathroom. There’s no reason for this room to be constrained to its own small space; indeed, one of the most exciting trends in luxury bathrooms is the combination of the bathroom with another room in the house, such as the master bedroom. Removing the barrier between the two rooms helps to weave the concept of self-care into every aspect of your day- to-day life. Showstopping design elements like a deep soaking tub are no longer relegated to the confines of the bathroom; instead, they play an integral part in the overall design of a master suite (perhaps separated from the bed area by a partition wall or a raised platform). You could also incorporate a small seating area in your bathroom layout, or, depending on your climate and the level of privacy in your home, design a bathroom that opens onto an outdoor patio with a shower or tub. By making your bathroom the luxurious focal point of your wellness rituals, you can elevate even the smallest habits and activities into calming and restorative experiences that lift your spirits and enhance your overall health.

Mid-century modern design is definitely having a moment, and there are ways to incorporate this unique trend in your bathroom in ways that are impactful without being overwhelming. Consider elegant mosaic tile flooring in a soft pastel shade of pink or mint green, or spice up your wall space with an asymmetrical or sunburst mirror.

Textural Touches

Adding a bit of texture to your bathroom counterbalances its smooth lines and keeps your space from appearing too sterile. Luxurious, stylized wallpaper in fabrics like grasscloth lend a tactile element to the room, creating a sense of warmth; just make sure your bathroom is properly ventilated (or stick to waterproof wallpaper materials such as fiberglass). Likewise, a gorgeously patterned wool rug can seamlessly tie disparate features together. There’s no need to worry about placing a wool rug in a high-humidity environment, either; wool naturally wicks moisture very effectively.

DREAM DESTINATION

Luxury Living in the Montana Mountains

Breathtaking natural beauty, endless outdoor activities and intriguing cultural attractions: Montana offers something for everyone. Opportunities abound for luxury homebuyers exploring the real estate options here, particularly in three distinct communities: Bozeman, Big Sky and Paradise Valley. Located within a 100-mile radius, these unique destinations each offer their own special appeal, but all three provide the perfect backdrop for those seeking a relaxed yet luxe lifestyle.

Outdoor Activities Those in the mood for outdoor adventure won’t be disappointed: Bozeman benefits from a prime location at the foot of several mountain ranges, with miles of river nearby and Yellowstone National Park just an hour and a half away. Whether your idea of a workout is a leisurely stroll or bike ride along the city’s comprehensive trail system, a day of fishing, a challenging hike or heart-pounding skiing, snowboarding or ice climbing, you’ll find it here. Bridger Bowl in particular is a must-visit for winter sports lovers, and is only 16 miles away from downtown Bozeman. Cultural and Community Attractions Bozeman is home to Montana State University, as well as the world-famous Museum of the Rockies, which is part of the University and is also affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution. Visitors of all ages will marvel at the exhibits here, including the largest collection of dinosaur remains in the country. Other cultural points of interest include the Bozeman Symphony and Montana Ballet Company - not to mention a wealth of eclectic art galleries with everything from contemporary mixed-media pieces to photography and sculpture.

Beautiful Bozeman: an “All-American City”

Named after founder John M. Bozeman, a frontiersman who founded the town in 1864, Bozeman is one of the fastest-growing small cities in the country. Once you spend a little time here, it’s not hard to understand why. One of the things that makes Bozeman such an attractive place to live is the way that it effortlessly blends the relaxed, friendly vibe of a smaller town with the cosmopolitan appeal of a larger metropolis. An average day might see you rubbing shoulders with local farmers, accomplished artists, successful business owners and cultural influencers - as well as plenty of students and families.

Shopping, Dining and Entertainment

Downtown Bozeman’s historic Main Street features an array of places to shop, eat, drink and explore. Sip a cup of coffee before or after a day spent browsing one-of-a-kind boutiques or attending one of the community’s year-round events. You can also head to the Bozeman Farmers Market (held at Lindley Park in the summer and at the Gallatin Valley Fairgrounds in the winter) for fresh meat, produce, flowers and more.

Big Sky: Intimate Ambiance, Oversized Beauty

Cultural and Community Attractions Big Sky prides itself on its flourishing artistic atmosphere, which is remarkably robust for such a small community. During the summer months, kick back and listen to established artists and new talent in the open air at Music in the Mountains, a popular annual concert series organized by the Arts Council of Big Sky. The council also plans other events including a yearly classical music festival, Shakespeare and ‘Nutcracker’ performances, fundraisers and more. Looking to add a new piece to your art collection? Check out one of the many galleries that line the streets of Big Sky Town Center.

With some of the most stunning horizons in all of Montana (if not the country), Big Sky certainly lives up to its moniker. While not technically a town, the community is home to over 3,000 people - all of whom enjoy a vibrant cultural scene, tax-free shopping and plenty of outdoor exploration. Outdoor Activities America’s premier ski resorts, with nearly 6,000 acres of skiable terrain. You can also try your hand at mountain biking and golf, or board the resort’s scenic tram to Lone Peak, Montana's highest scenic overlook. Other area activities include whitewater rafting, horseback riding and bird watching. Big Sky is also just 50 miles from Yellowstone National Park - more than close enough for a day trip. Big Sky is perhaps best known as being the home of Big Sky Resort - one of

Shopping, Dining and Entertainment

Both Big Sky Resort and Big Sky Town Center offer many wonderful places to grab a bite, enjoy an evening out or indulge in a little pampering or retail therapy. Stop by a boutique to pick up an item for your home, book a massage at one of several day spas or refuel with fresh local cuisine as you savor a craft brew. You can also catch a movie at the theater or treat your family to an afternoon of seasonal ice skating.

Outdoor Activities

Paradise Valley: Heaven on Earth

Paradise Valley is one of the nation’s premier fly fishing locales - not surprising, perhaps, considering its proximity to the Yellowstone River. The area’s three spring creeks - Armstrong's/O'Hair's, DePuy's and Nelson's - also offer fantastic opportunities to catch trout. If fishing isn’t your thing, you can plan a river rafting excursion, followed by a therapeutic soak in one of the area’s hot springs (Chico Hot Springs Resort being the most popular). Or perfect your swing at nearby Livingston Golf Course, a nine-hole course with challenging play and panoramic views. Cultural and Community Attractions Though it was once known as the gateway to Yellowstone National Park, Paradise Valley is now a worthwhile destination in its own right - particularly with regard to arts and culture. Dive deeper into the history of the region at the Yellowstone Gateway Museum, tour the Parks Reece Gallery or attend a performance at Shane Lalani Center for the Arts. The Livingston Center for Art and Culture plays an active part within the community, staging a number of events and exhibits throughout the year.

Located roughly 30 miles east of Bozeman and about 70 miles northeast of Big Sky, Paradise Valley is one of Montana’s best-kept secrets. (It’s not that much of a secret, however - many noteworthy artists, musicians and actors call Paradise Valley home for at least part of the year.) The town of Livingston is generally considered the hub of Paradise Valley, although other communities, including Emigrant, Gardiner and Chico, are also mentioned when referring to the area.

Shopping, Dining and Entertainment

Livingston and Gardiner both feature busy downtown districts with stores selling everything from quirky antiques to clothing, accessories and outdoor gear. The dining scene in Livingston in particular has grown steadily in recent years (the Executive Chef at the aforementioned Chico Hot Springs Resort has been nominated for a prestigious James Beard award). And for a real taste of Western culture, don’t miss one of the area’s many rodeos, including the Livingston Roundup, which has operated for nearly 100 years. Bozeman, Big Sky and Paradise Valley all offer a range of beautiful luxury homes for sale, so if you’re deciding where to live in Montana, you'll find yourself spoiled for choice. Wherever you settle down in this extraordinary part of the country, it’s safe to say you won’t be disappointed.

LIVING GREEN

Eco-Friendly Home Design

The luxury home business is one of many industries that have transformed their way of thinking in response to climate change and its impact on the ecosystem. Builders and homeowners are increasingly tailoring their living spaces to combine cutting-edge technology and luxe design with a healthy respect for the environment and a desire to lessen their footprint and preserve the earth’s natural resources. Here are some of the most innovative trends in green luxury homes for 2022 and beyond.

Source Sustainable (and Local) Materials

Let it Rain The practice of collecting rainwater is certainly not new; the technique dates back thousands of years, and has been used throughout history as a means of providing people in many cultures with much needed water for themselves and their communities. But the rainwater harvesters you’ll find in today’s luxury homes use technology that extends far beyond traditional methods. These deluxe installations collect water from the house’s roof, removing any organic material like leaves or dirt and depositing it into an underground tank. A sophisticated filtration system then purifies the water, rendering it drinkable, before feeding it into the house’s main water supply. Once the rainwater tanks are empty, the system is programmed to automatically revert back to your local water supply, so there’s no need to worry about your house running out of water before the next rainfall.

It should come as no surprise that the most eco-friendly homes are crafted from environmentally sustainable materials. Bamboo, reclaimed wood, recycled glass and recycled steel are top choices among green luxury home builders because these materials carry a much lower environmental footprint; bamboo in particular is sturdy enough for use in construction, and grows back extremely quickly when harvested. Where you get your material from is as important as the material itself, too. That’s why homeowners are increasingly choosing locally sourced building materials as a way of reducing their carbon impact. By avoiding the greenhouse gas emissions, noise and air pollution associated with shipping large quantities of building material across the country or the world, owners can feel confident that their home design efforts don’t negatively impact the environment. (And as a side benefit, sourcing local materials also showcases the natural beauty of a home’s regional surroundings.)

Build a Better Bathroom Green home trends for 2022 include plenty of bathroom enhancements that prioritize luxury and self-care without sacrificing environmental responsibility. Japanese-style hot soaking tubs such as the FURO® include water purification systems that reduce the need for harsh chemicals - as well as built-in heaters that keep your water warm, without the waste associated with draining and refilling the tub multiple times.

Where you get your material from is as important as the material itself, too. " "

Another luxurious way to conserve energy in your bathroom (or anywhere else in your house, for that matter) is to install a hydronic radiant heating system. Elegant in its simplicity, this system involves embedding strong, flexible plastic tubing just beneath your flooring and pumping warm water through the tubing - thus creating a uniformly warm surface that radiates upward, increasing the overall temperature of your living space without the use of electricity.

Preserve the Great Outdoors

Gone are the days when “luxury” and “eco-friendly” were mutually exclusive terms. Environmental sustainability has become a crucial element of luxury design in recent years - and is sure to play a key role in the homes of the future. the temperature is a fairly steady 55 degrees year-round. In the winter, the warmth from the earth’s sub- layer is absorbed into the air of your home, where a heat pump warms it further. In the summer, heat from the air is dispersed down into the ground, helping the temperature inside the house to remain cool. Dig Deep Geothermal heating and cooling uses a similar installation to hydronic radiant heating - that is, water flowing through pipes below your flooring. Geothermal pipes, however, are buried much deeper underground than radiant heat pipes; they need to be placed about 10 feet under the surface of the earth, where

The property surrounding your home can be designed sustainably as well . " "

Luxury green living isn’t just limited to inside your house; the property surrounding your home can be designed sustainably as well. Whether or not you live in an area that is prone to drought, consider landscaping your yard with greenery that thrives without the need for constant watering, such as geraniums, aloe and sage. Likewise, planting native species of wildflowers on your property is a beautiful way to preserve your local ecosystem (and wildflower gardens are a particularly popular trend among luxury estate owners these days). Soak up the Sun The environmental advantages of solar energy are undeniable, and there are many different ways in which you can harness the sun’s rays to power various aspects of your home. Look and feel- wise, however, traditional roof-affixed solar panels may not necessarily mesh with your design aesthetic.

That’s where solar roofs come in. Solar roofs offer the same electricity- generating functionality as the standard rectangular panels we’ve grown accustomed to seeing. But these cutting-edge roofs are actually composed of individual solar panel tiles, or “shingles” (technically referred to as photovoltaic shingles), each of which mimics the design of shingles used to build a conventional roof. The use of photovoltaic shingles transforms your entire roof into a solar panel in a way that is much more aesthetically pleasing than that of traditional solar panels (and more durable, on average, than slate or asphalt shingles). Tesla and Luma Solar are the current industry leaders in luxury solar roof solutions, but this is a market that is likely to expand as the desire for more green home design grows.

Bringing the Luxury Bar Experience to Your Home

Luxury home bars have become an increasingly popular phenomenon in recent years. There’s something very special about having a space in your house specifically designed for enjoying a cocktail and entertaining friends and family. Add to that the fact that home bars remove the hassle of traveling or dealing with crowds, and the concept becomes even more appealing. Below are some ideas and inspiration for creating a luxury bar in the comfort of your home.

Swim-up Sophistication Few things feel quite as indulgent as cooling off with a refreshing beverage while floating languidly in a sparkling swimming pool. By including a swim- up bar in your pool, you can bring the resort vacation experience right to your own backyard. Designing your pool bar from scratch with professional pool builders enables you to choose everything from the curvature of the counter and the tiling on your built-in stools to the layout of the “dry side” of your bar (which can offer much more than just drinks - some pool bar dry sides include wood-burning stoves, grills and other gourmet appliances). If you have a pool already and you don’t want to commit to a full reconstruction project, you can always portion off an area of the pool deck at the shallow end, add decorative tiling to differentiate the area from the rest of the pool and drop in some submersible lounge chairs.

Swanky Speakeasy With their unique atmosphere and classic cocktails, speakeasy-style lounges have experienced a resurgence over the last decade or so. Take the trend a step further by replicating one of these chic watering holes in your home. The bars of the Prohibition era were famous for their intimate, “secret” ambiance, so you’ll want to set the scene with rich, warm decor. Paint your walls with deep tones like burgundy or use patterned, textured wallpaper. Twinkling crystal chandeliers and tufted leather sofas provide soft lighting and comfortable seating. Finish the look with velvet drapery and mirrors; decorate the bar with burnished brass accents and a stylish cocktail set, complete with a shaker and a strainer. Fun and Games If your idea of the perfect evening involves a little healthy competition, consider creating a luxury game room/ sports bar with all the trappings (think gleaming taps, polished wood and brass foot rails). These types of home bars allow for more people to enjoy the space, since they provide activities other than drinking; increase the excitement factor by installing pub-style games like a dart board, a billiards table and a shuffleboard table. You could also appeal to your inner child (and everyone else’s) by stocking the room with retro arcade games. And of course, no game room would be complete without a large flat-screen TV to broadcast the day’s biggest sporting events.

A Piece of Paradise Sip a cocktail and transport yourself to a tropical island in an outdoor bar inspired by the South Pacific. When constructed using traditional Polynesian methods, these remarkable structures feature sturdy, elegantly rustic materials including natural thatch and bamboo (which, as an added bonus, are also environmentally sustainable). Enhance your space and pay homage to the remarkable craftsmanship of the region with an intricately carved wooden panel, and hang warm LED pendant lights to impart a cozy atmosphere.

Stunning Showcase While it’s exciting to recreate the ambiance of an exotic locale or a bygone era, your home bar doesn’t necessarily have to emulate a specific theme or destination. Don’t be afraid to shine a spotlight on one specific element - from the intricate tiling on your bartop to the distinctiveness of your liquor collection. There are several different ways to display your fancy liqueurs and cocktail finery. If you’re looking to keep your space as sleek and streamlined as possible, the simplest option is a sophisticated bar cart or trolley, which also offers the flexibility of being mobile and is easy to restock. Place your most impressive bottles and glassware on the cart to give guests a “sneak peek”, and store the rest of your accoutrements out of sight.

There’s something special about having a space specifically designed for enjoying a cocktail . " "

Looking for something a little more dramatic? Invest in built-in cabinets with glass doors to draw attention to your collection and add a unique design element to the room. Add mirrors to the back walls of the shelves (or install a mirrored backsplash underneath the shelves) to make the space really pop. There are plenty of different options to consider, but ultimately the style that you choose for your home bar is less important than the way the space makes you feel. A successful home bar offers a luxury escape from life’s daily routine - a chance to unwind and spend some well- deserved time with your nearest and dearest.
