HOME ACCESSORIES that make your interiors feel luxe

Elevating your home design does not have to be about redoing everything. Instead, focus on changing a handful of decorative elements to create the luxurious feel you want. If you choose wisely, dramatic accessories, like bold mirrors, custom lighting, and statement artwork, though an investment, can make a significant impact. BOLD MIRRORS As Southern Living once reported, “Mirrors make the space.” If you want to add a feeling of sumptuous luxury to your home, one of the best ways to do it is by adding a bold mirror. Are you trying to transform an architecturally interesting yet hard to decorate bathroom, bedroom nook, or office space? Southern Living loves adding custom mirrors to “create the instant illusion of greater space and reflect any natural or artificial light, brightening the room.” Dramatic sunburst mirrors create visual appeal over a fireplace, while square antique Art Deco mirrors can make any bedroom feel glamorous. Oversized mirrors are investments that make a statement whether you lean a wrought-iron framed mirror against a living area wall in a loft or fill a blank library wall with a mirror in a gilded frame. Don’t forget about your entrance hall. You might be surprised at how easily transitional spaces can be made to feel luxurious with an artistic, design-forward mirror. Do you have a variety of differently sized mirrors that you can’t find space for separately? Try off-setting and layering them against one another, with the largest in the back, either resting against a living room wall or on a generous fireplace mantle. Even freestanding easels can help create an arresting showcase for antique treasures.

STATEMENT ARTWORK Whether you love maximalist décor or

streamlined, minimalist interiors, a piece of statement artwork can tie your décor together and become a focal point. Stunning artwork can bring interest to any room, but oversized paintings, sculptures, photographs, or other art pieces are unique accessories in that they quickly imbue your home with a truly luxurious feeling. Bold colors on a canvas can bring visual warmth and softness to an otherwise Brutalist design. Layered pieces draw the eye in a Scandinavian-inspired room, while classical paintings done in oils can be showcased in even the most modern homes. Gallery walls are also finding their visual voice again, and, according to Better Homes & Gardens , “Line Art is the minimalist statement your gallery wall needs” as it “makes a simple yet striking addition to modern-day gallery walls.”

RICH HOME TAPESTRIES When InStyle revealed that fashion designer Christian Louboutin’s home in Western France included a “treasure-filled room that reflects his passion for global bazaars and antique emporiums, including a 16th-century tapestry,” the magazine may have sparked a growing trend for creating home interiors with a story. The good news is that you do not need a 13th-century castle to make this dramatic accessory work. The varied textures, patterns, and colors of an exquisitely-made tapestry can make any home come alive and give it a sense of history. If you are intrigued by the idea, visit a reputable auction house to bid on something antique and storied, or choose a modern tapestry, many of which are reinterpreting classical cultural themes from a 21st-century perspective. INDULGENT, SUSTAINABLE RUGS AND CARPETS As hotelier and designer Kit Kemp explained to Departures , “We can easily forget the luxury of a beautiful carpet under bare feet.” Warmth, color, texture, comfort, and size are all elements that should be on your mind when choosing a rug or carpet to finish your space. Among Kemp’s favorites is a “geometric jute-and-wool rug featuring blue, orange, green, yellow, and red dots throughout.” The colors and patterns are eye-catching, the weave of this accessory invites bare feet, and the material is part of a growing trend toward

incorporating sustainable, natural fibers in the home. “When it comes to choosing a rug, size plays a critical role, and often, in order to bring in the right size rug that will fill a space correctly, it’s going to be an investment,” according to celebrity designer Joanna Gaines in an interview in Southern Living . She cautions that going too small with a rug will make a room feel much smaller than it is and that larger rugs, placed under your furniture, will open up a room. Today, Gaines will often start a room redesign with a rug and work around the piece, allowing her clients to choose something visually extraordinary that can be layered and referenced by the furniture and home accessories added later. It’s a trick you might consider if you are embarking on a redesign of your own. In terms of decorative home accessories, your choice of lighting fixtures and shades can play a critical role, and not just in terms of how bright or intimate the room feels. A glow from the right lighting elements can bring an instant sense of grandeur. And you don’t have to limit bold statements to your home’s entryway or dining room. When working with a designer, consider commissioning a custom piece that works with or adds contrast to your overall design aesthetic. From classic chandeliers to dazzling pendants or dramatic geometric pieces, your custom-designed light fixture will make the statement you want and need. You’ll be amazed at the transformation that happens CUSTOM LIGHT ACCESSORIES

with simply swapping out recessed lights for a glamorous hanging fixture or a romantic chandelier. Table and standing lamps can also go bold. Bhon Bhon is a designer favorite, including of Miles Redd, who favors colorful lampshades for a significant impact in a small package. Why Bhon Bhon? Redd explains to Departures that Bhon Bhon Lighting is a “go-to” because it “handcrafts custom shades using everything from painted linens to pierced leather.” It allows buyers to have an entirely personalized piece that will bring a unique glow to every room. GO GREEN One of the quickest ways to transform your home into a luxury haven is to add a bit of greenery. From soaring ferns to arrangements of small potted plants (and the pots themselves can be custom works of art), adding a bit of green as a natural accessory to whatever room you are upgrading will instantly elevate it. What are some of Martha Stewart Living’s favorite showstopping plants? The magazine reveals that they love having orchids of any variety placed prominently in living areas. Among their favorites is Grammatophyllum scriptum var. citrinum because of its long life and “its chartreuse blooms bursting from giant stalks that can reach three feet in height.” Other plants that have made their “must-have” lists include hanging succulents, Red Ripples, Money Plants, and, of course, the rhizomatous Begonia “Martha Stewart.”

design a SERENE SPACE using organic and sustainable materials

There is a marked shift in the luxury design world toward creating serene rooms using organic materials. While this trend started before the pandemic, it has picked up steam as people are more aware than ever of the value of being in spaces they love and owning quality bespoke items that will stand the test of time. Disposable décor is out. Mindful luxury is definitely in.With this in mind, read on for our tips on how to design a serene space you’ll love using organic and sustainable materials.

12 | THE DISTINCTIVE LIFE®

Volume 8

DESIGNWITHVEGAN AND ZERO-VOC PAINT While low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints have become the norm, brands like Benjamin Moore have gone the extra step of developing a color-tinting process that avoids the addition of harmful chemicals and is emission-free. Their Natura line is certified as being allergy-friendly and can be used by asthma suffers. And nothing brings serenity to a room like the knowledge that you will be healthier in it.

You may be surprised to learn some paint companies use animal products as binders. If you are looking for an eco-friendly, sustainable option that excludes animal byproducts, be sure to read the label. Companies like Auro Paints and Painting Columbus have switched to using plant materials to create paints that incorporate a sustainable approach for a densely-hued finished product. As Daniel Brooks, Painting Columbus’ co-owner,

explained to Better Homes & Gardens : “Vegan paint replaces all animal products with a natural plant-based binder, such as vegetable casein or legumin, and certify that they are cruelty-free ... these substitutions allow vegan paints to serve as healthier alternatives and create less-toxic environments for your family or friends.”

EMPLOY NATURAL TEXTURES Consider designing your space using natural textures like organic linen, wood from sustainably managed forests, vintage beams, and reclaimed leather. If you do, you’ll find yourself creating a layered room from ceiling to floor that is both versatile and calming. Offering enviable durability, sustainable, natural fiber rugs bring a luxurious feel and work with nearly any design aesthetic. Southern Living raves: “Whether it’s jute, sea grass, or sisal, incorporating woven materials into your décor connects the indoors with the outdoors,” bringing casual refinement to beach houses and serenity and lush texture to even the most modern homes. Do you love the visual interest that comes from wallpaper but want to avoid a pattern clash with your other décor? The sustainable design experts at Southern Living have the answer: grasscloth, a fast-growing, organic material. The magazine reveals that “the subtle, elegant texture adds that extra bit of decorating oomph, without overwhelming a soothing sea-inspired space.”

SELECT HANDCRAFTED FURNITURE Handcrafted furniture pieces made using organic and sustainably sourced materials offer opportunities for customization along with undeniable comfort. Vincent Van Duysen, a Belgian architect and product and interior designer, strives to bring simplicity and a timeless quality to everything he designs. He explains his approach to sustainable design to Departures : “I work with very pure and natural materials like desaturated oak woods, lime- washed brickwork. Really pale nuances and toned-down touches,” says Van Duysen. “It’s in line with the calm and serene atmospheres I create.” Carl Hansen & Son, the famed Danish furniture maker, agrees that craftsmanship, comfort, and beauty go hand-in-hand with sustainable design. Known for their meticulous work, they take equal care in using organic or sustainably sourced materials. In business since 1908, they take wood from sustainably managed forests, only use sawmills that are part of the responsible milling movement, and recycle what small pieces are not used for heating. Their business motto is “every piece comes with a story” whether it is one of their iconic chairs made from “sculpted wood and a woven paper-cord seat” that is showcased in Departures or their thoroughly modern “Sideways Sofa.”

INCORPORATE ANTIQUE STATEMENT PIECES Rejuvenating your home by incorporating antique treasures not only answers your sustainable design goals but can bring a warm feeling of history and connection to a refreshed space. Art Deco pieces are enjoying a particular resurgence. As Daniel Ayer, the director of 20th-century design at Skinner Inc., tells Martha Stewart Living , “Art Deco lends a touch of sophistication to more austere contemporary design with its emphasis on clean lines, minimalist furnishings, and accessories, and neutral color palette.” Vintage sofas, antique free-standing cupboards, and classic lighting choices can significantly impact a space. You might be amazed at the impression of luxurious comfort that flows throughout the room with the addition of just one storied piece. Design experts at Southern Living advise people to “use antiques to anchor a room and then mix in modern touches with bold fabrics, mid- century lighting, and sculptural accessories” for a sustainable design that won’t feel too crowded or too precious. You want to be able to surround yourself in the beauty and comfort of the space, not avoid using the room because it feels like a museum.

MAXIMIZE SUNLIGHT

Enhancing a room’s access to natural light is one of the best ways to promote a sense of calm and well-being. While it may require additional construction to widen windows, introduce skylights, or create sunrooms, the investment will be worth it. As Martha Stewart Living advises, “sunlight directly impacts our mental and physical health, and can have far-reaching influences beyond the common winter blues.” Your sleep patterns, focus, productivity, and sense of inner peace are likely to improve with even minor adjustments. Any sustainable design plan should take into account the room’s exposure to natural sunlight. You will then want to enhance that light by bringing in mirrors and other reflective surfaces, choosing lighter or neutral tones as your color base and selecting window treatments that best give you access to the natural light streaming from the outside.

BRING IN GREENERY It’s hard to think of a more organic, sustainable way to bring a sense of calm to your home than by incorporating living plants. Adding greenery is credited with everything from imbuing a space with a sense of tranquility to improved air quality. What’s the best accessory to bring hints of oceanside calm to

any home, no matter its location? Southern Living reveals: “For big impact with a coastal vibe, choose palm fronds or banana leaves, which are both architectural and reminiscent of the islands.” Meanwhile, Martha Stewart Living recommends adding plants to every room, including Red Ripples, cascading

succulents, Money Plants, and orchids — particularly the Grammatophyllum scriptum var. citrinum due to “its chartreuse blooms bursting from giant stalks that can reach three feet in height.” And, of course, don’t forget to add the rhizomatous Begonia “Martha Stewart” to your final design.

Volume 8

SUMMER COCKTAILS Rosé Sangria Sangria is always a good choice when the temperature starts to rise, and Martha Stewart Living offers an exhilarating twist on a classic. What is the key to this recipe? The magazine reveals that their sangria “recipe infuses vodka and the unofficial wine of summer, rosé, with juicy nectarines and fragrant strawberries.” Do you love the idea in theory but want a non-alcoholic version to add to your menu? “Omit the vodka and replace the wine with

seltzer.” Be sure to make an extra batch of both versions because you and your guests are going to want seconds as you bask in the beauty of a balmy evening. Chasing Summer Even the name “Chasing Summer” evokes images of warm breezes, relaxation, and fun. It’s not a surprise that the actual recipe does the same. Much loved by the editors at Food

& Wine as a non-alcoholic option for cocktail hour, this chai sun tea and passion fruit puree drink offers a surprising twist: balsamic vinegar. Lacy Hawkins, a bartender at NYC’s The NoMad, is also a fan. As she explains to the magazine:” ‘It adds wonderful acidity to the drink and creates a caramelized finish.” Get ready to hear the raves from everyone who tries it.

Yellow-Watermelon Margaritas How does a margarita “bursting with yellow watermelon, white tequila, and the elderflower liqueur, St. Germain” sound? This sweet and fruity watermelon cocktail recipe also makes Martha Stewart Living’s list of favorite summer drinks. Not only is it delicious, but the color is a showstopper. Pair this refreshing drink with a crispy snack, such as the herb-roasted pecans or cucumber chips mentioned below. Do you need to make a mocktail version of this recipe? That is simple enough – just leave out the tequila and St-Germain, and you will still have a libation that pleases the palate. Lemon-and-Lavender Gin Fizz Botanical cocktails will be the talk of the season, and this lemon-and-lavender recipe is sure to be a hit. What is the critical ingredient? According to Food & Wine , “Leopold’s Summer Gin brings a smooth, floral flavor to this botanical cocktail with notes of cucumber, sage, lemon, and lavender.” Total preparation for this recipe is approximately five minutes, making this the perfect choice for busy hosts. If you decide to include the rose petals in your presentation, take heed of their warning to only use food-safe rose petals for garnish. Manhattan Ice Cream Float Remember how much you loved ice cream floats when you were a child? Chef Gabriel Frasca has a decidedly adult version that thrills the taste buds; “The inspired twist in chef

Gabriel Frasca’s playful dessert cocktail is whipped cream spiked with sweet vermouth,” according to Food & Wine . It’s every bit as decadent as it sounds, and a delightful cap on a summer evening with close friends. With some minor adjustments, including substituting oak milk frozen dessert for the vanilla dairy-based ice cream, you can also make this a vegan treat. Summer Spritzes One of the most popular warm-weather cocktails is the iconic spritz. Recipes typically combine a crisp sparkling wine and a liqueur for a bubbly libation. But for something with an extra zing, try Martha Stewart Living’s Hibiscus- Ginger Spritz, which they describe as a “stunning thirst-quencher.” The dried hibiscus flowers yield a rich red color, and the frosty drink is just what you need to cool off during hot late-afternoon cocktail hours. The basic recipe is non-alcoholic, but if you want to take it from a mocktail to cocktail, add 1 ounce of light rum per serving, before the seltzer.

DELICIOUS NIBBLES

Herb-Roasted Pecans Herb-roasted pecans are the ideal “something crunchy” that complements a range of cocktails and other beverages. As Martha Stewart Living raves: “With fresh thyme, rosemary, black pepper, and a touch of sugar, these herb-roasted pecans strike that perfect sweet-and-salty balance.” Easy to prepare and even easier for your guests to grab, this snack is great for outdoor cocktail hours by the pool or under the trees. Plus, they can be made up to a week before you need them — although don’t be surprised if your family sneaks some before the cocktail hour arrives. a simple guacamole accented with tequila and lime. As they explain: “Ready in just 10 minutes, this fantastic dip is best with high- quality tequila or mezcal, which would add an additional smoky flavor.” Keep in mind that because this smoky tequila can be quite a strong taste, you want to be judicious with its use in the recipe so that it doesn’t overwhelm the other flavors. While the possible pairings are plentiful, try sampling this delightful snack with the yellow-watermelon margaritas detailed above. Guacamole with Tequila and Lime Are you still searching for the perfect dip for vegetables or tortilla chips? Food & Wine loves

Tomato Salsa with Cucumber “Chips” Another vegan option that is also antioxidant- rich and nearly fat-free is a tomato salsa and cucumber “chips” recipe heralded by Food & Wine . Preparation is approximately 20 minutes, but most of that is chopping – no cooking required. Cucumber fans will love dipping slices into a salsa mix of tomatoes, jalapeño, fresh cilantro, onion, and lime juice. This should also pair well with the yellow- watermelon margaritas or the sangria. If you want to taste it against a wine option, try it with a dry or medium-dry German Riesling.

Prosciutto Crostini Crostini recipes are always a good idea when planning a cocktail hour menu of small bites. For something quick-to-prepare and satisfying, Real Simple suggests their “Prosciutto Crostini With Lemony Fennel Slaw.” Pairing well with a crisp white wine or even spritzer, this delightful snack hinges on using the freshest lemon juice, fennel bulbs, and flat-leaf parsley you can find. And, of course, the thinner the prosciutto is sliced, the better.

Volume 8

Summer Grazing Board Want to serve something that looks impressive but is actually one of Martha Stewart Living’s favorite “no-cook” recipes? The magazine’s “Summer Grazing Board” is a delicious alternative to preparing many individual appetizers. There are two key elements to a successful board: cutting every item into bite-sized pieces for easy sampling and using the highest-quality dips, cheese, and meats. If your cocktail hour is inside, soft or stinky cheeses will be a hit. However, if you are planning outdoor nibbles, Martha Stewart Living suggests “selecting types that stand up to the summer heat” like Manchego,

Date-and-Almond Fudge You can’t go wrong when you include something extra indulgent among your summer cocktail hour offerings. Food & Wine’s date-and-almond fudge treat is much lauded because the “minimalist recipe is made with healthy fats—coconut oil and roasted almond butter—for a sticky, rich and satisfying vegan sweet.” The Medjool dates, almond butter, vanilla, and coconut oil are pureed to create a paste that will only invite sampling. You can make and refrigerate this tasty nibble an hour before your cocktails, keep it on hand in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze it for up to a month.

Drunken Goat, and Gouda. When planning your charcuterie options, the magazine advises that you choose at least two different types of “thinly sliced, beautifully marbled meats, like prosciutto and capicola, or salami.” Fill out your grazing board with crunchy vegetables, olives, cornichons, nuts, crackers, fruit crisps, and, of course, richly satisfying dips.

EASY PEACH POTPIE DESSERT

Summer is the season of stone fruit, which means the chefs in Martha Stewart Living’s test kitchen are looking forward to dessert recipes filled with juicy peaches, apricots, and cherries. One of their favorite go-to recipes is a decadent yet easy-to-make peach potpie using store-bought puff pastry. Out of the oven, the irresistible pastry offers a delightfully flaky top and “amped up with bourbon, brown sugar, and vanilla, the peach filling is no slouch either.” The key ingredients here are the best summer peaches you can find. So take your time when you shop. Pick ripe options at your local farmers’ market or grocer that have a wonderfully appealing aroma, and some give to the flesh – rock- hard fruit will not be nearly as delicious. If you are trying to decide between a few different types of peaches, assistant food editor Lindsay Strand recommends using yellow peaches for their color and flavor intensity FROZEN CHOCOLATE CHIP MERINGATA Creamy, frozen “meringue cake” is an Italian specialty, and it ranks highly among Food & Wine’s favorite make-ahead summer dessert recipes. Because it’s frozen, it is easy to prep this wonderfully distinctive dessert in the days before your party, freeing you up to other preparations and enjoying time with your guests. The magazine raves: “It’s essentially a giant meringue ice cream sandwich, except it’s filled with super simple chocolate-swirled whipped cream instead of ice cream.” On a steamy summer night, this is guaranteed to be a hit. But don’t be surprised if you and your family like this so much that you are planning on ways to enjoy it all year long.

LEMON-BLUEBERRY CHEESECAKE PARFAITS Thoroughly delicious and beautifully presented in glass bowls, pastry chef Maggie Leung’s “Lemon-Blueberry Cheesecake Parfaits” continue to thrill the editors at Food & Wine . They applaud this reimagined cheesecake for its “three components—the creamy, tangy cheesecake custard, the crunchy cornmeal shortbread, and the fresh blueberry compote.” They also love that you can serve this dessert recipe as-is for your

next summer party or use the components in thoroughly tempting ways like drizzling the blueberry compote over your favorite vegan frozen dessert or serving the custard with fresh fruit rather than a compote. No matter which way you go, your summer party guests will be delighted.

FIGS FLAMBÉWITH PORT AND GELATO Are you looking for something as indulgent as it is eye-catching? You’ll want to seriously consider adding Martha Stewart Living’s “Figs Flambé with Port and Gelato” to your summer dessert list. Besides the wow factor associated with a flambé, the

BLACKBERRY FOOL WITH CALVADOS You can never go wrong with a classic, and the Blackberry Fool is a much-loved British summer dessert that thrills. But if you want to take it to the next level, try the Peter Ting recipe that has grabbed the imagination and tempted the taste buds of the editors at Food & Wine . Ting brings sophistication to this delectable dessert by soaking “half the blackberries overnight in Calvados, then topping the fruit with dollops of whipped

Food & Wine offers this insider tip: “The leftover macerating liquid would make a delicious drink mixed with sparkling water or Champagne.” Serve your Blackberry Fool in tall glasses with a side of salted shortbread cookies and get ready for compliments.

BERRIES AND CREAM CONES

When you see a sugar cone, you know that summer has arrived. If you are searching for a way to elevate this summer dessert staple, turn to Martha Stewart Living’s “Berries and Cream Cones” recipe. Not only is it quick – only 15 minutes total – but it is the deliciously sweet answer to a hot summer night for kids and adults. Grab your tall glasses and fill them with sugar cones dipped in melted chocolate (chocolate side up). Once those are properly chilled, you’ll fill them with a heavenly mixture of whisked heavy cream and sugar, as well as a swirled top of fresh berries, like raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries. It’s sure to be a party favorite! Whether you are hosting a party in your backyard or at a vacation retreat, Food & Wine’s “Summer Plum Crostata” should be on your menu. This elegant tart serves six and is best made from firm-but-ripe plums. Any will do, but chef Kelly Liken favors tart Colorado plums for this crostata dessert. This enticing sweet-yet-tart dish doesn’t require special pans for cooking, and the pastry can be made and refrigerated up to three days before your party – making this almost as practical as it is delicious. FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE SKILLET CAKE

Do you have chocolate lovers on your summer party guest list? Real Simple’s

“Flourless Chocolate Skillet Cake” is the ideal answer to chocolate cravings and can really be served any time of the year. This recipe is excellent for those who have gluten-free diets or are looking for an extraordinary chocolate dessert. And if you want to elevate the cake even more, take Real Simple’s advice and serve it with “coffee (or vanilla, or, what the heck, more chocolate) ice cream” or non-dairy frozen desserts. This recipe feeds up to eight people, but you might want to make two because you know people will want seconds (and thirds)! how to create a private BACKYARD OASIS You may love your backyard, but it won’t be easy to see it as a haven if you don’t have enough privacy. The good news is that you can create a secluded hideaway that can be enjoyed as a relaxing escape, outdoor dining room, or private playground with some careful planning and bold planting. Read on as we offer tips and suggestions for how to create a private, envy-inducing backyard oasis.

BUILDWALLS AND FENCES Creating a private backyard hideaway might be as simple as building a decorative wall or installing a stylish wooden fence. Today, a gorgeous variety of wooden fences with significant design elements and architecturally intriguing stone walls can be added to your space in a day or two, depending on the size of the property you are enclosing. Mid- Century Modern styles are particularly

popular right now, as are combinations of wooden panels between stone pillars, and the look can genuinely transform the feel of your entire property. Once the wall, fence, or combination of the two is in place, you can choose to dress it up with everything from embedded metalwork to murals. The landscape design professionals at Better Homes & Gardens love the idea of adding

something unusual to a physical boundary concept. The magazine explains: “Build a fence from out-of-the-ordinary materials like plexiglass, which stops the neighbors from peering in but allows light to pass through. It also shows off textures on the other side.”

31 bhgrecollection.com |

LIFE & LEISURE

USE LATTICE FENCING AND TRELLIS GARDEN BOXES If you like the idea of seclusion, but want something that doesn’t completely enclose your space, consider introducing lattice fencing or trellis garden boxes to your backyard. Both work well as physical barriers between properties and as dividing techniques when creating zones within your own backyard. Climbing roses, flowering vines, Star Jasmine, and a host of different types of ivy can dress up lattice or trellis panels in a single season after planting. GROW PRIVACY HEDGES Adding privacy hedges is a great way to create a living boundary that separates your yard from your neighbors’ spaces. Remember that every region is different, so it is critical to do some research into which planted hedges will grow the best in your climate. Also, you want to be sure that whatever variety you choose for your space will rise to the width and height you need at maturity, particularly if you are hoping for a towering, dense hedge as a frame for your backyard oasis. Are you stumped as to which hedge to grow? Frank Leloia, president of Custom Landscaping and Lawncare, in an interview with Martha Stewart Living , suggests that “you may want to consider the emerald green arborvitae” because it is very dense and can grow up to 15-feet tall and three to four feet wide, it requires very little pruning or shearing, and thrives in full sun to partial shade.

INCLUDETALL, FLOWERING PLANTS Bring brilliant color or calming fragrance to your backyard, as well as much-needed privacy when you include tall, flowering plants like Joe Pye Weed, Perennial Hibiscus, or Gardenia Veitchii. Martha Stewart Living applauds the addition of gardenia plants because they “add a little fragrance to your yard,” and they “can grow between six and eight feet in height.” Perennial Hibiscus plants can climb up to seven feet tall and typically withstand freezing temperatures in winter. They make the recommended perennial list compiled by the pros at Better Homes & Gardens because “this giant plant produces 12-inch-wide flowers in stunning shades of red, pink, and white on stems that can tower over your garden.” Another stunning bloomer adored by Better Homes & Gardens is the Joe Pye Weed, which grows up to eight feet tall. Known as a hardy addition to most gardens, “in late summer, this plant produces waves of nectar-rich pink flowers that butterflies love.” Want even more privacy? Create tiered plantings by designing raised beds or soil berms. This will help make your backyard feel like even more of an oasis as the additional soil will add height to your plantings, expose the plants themselves to more sunlight, and allow you to bask in the beauty of each row of plants. None of your plants will be overshadowed by the others. The extra tall plants in the back rows will create a living screen, while smaller plants on the lower tiers can add visual power to your new backyard hideaway.

FOSTERTOWERING TREES If you have a vision of your backyard turning into a lush, leafy bower, and you have the space for it, planting a tree (or several) will yield decades of rewards for your efforts. From the Leyland Cypress Tree to the Norway Spruce or majestic Maple, even adding a single tree to your backyard can transform it. Trees can be planted to create their own secret section within your backyard, perfect for secluded dinner parties, romantic date nights, or afternoons spent reading in a suspended hammock. Add a garden bench amidst the trees, and you’ll marvel at the transformation. As Will Massie, co-founder of McKinnon and Harris, tells Departures : “A bench takes a yard and makes it a garden. It becomes a destination when viewed from a distance like a piece of sculpture.” DESIGN CONTAINER GARDENS Whether you want to create a specific zone for entertaining in a large backyard oasis or you want to bring color and privacy to your terrace, deck, or patio, container gardens may be the answer. From classic ceramic pieces to modern metal containers, “big, bold container gardens are ideal for creating privacy,” according to Better Homes & Gardens . Of course, you don’t have to limit yourself to flowers. Container gardens are also well-equipped for fast-growing bamboo, thriving vegetable crops, and eye-catching succulents, depending on your climate. If you have additional containers and you are looking for more suggestions, Departures suggests “planting a few pots with aromatic herbs such as rosemary, basil, and mint—they not only smell great, but you can use them in your food and drinks.”

UTILIZE EXISTING STRUCTURES If you are considering building a new outdoor kitchen and entertaining area in your backyard, assess your property’s existing structures. If you have a guest house, pool house, greenhouse, studio, or garage on the property, you can use part of the existing structure as a privacy barrier. From there, you can add lush plantings on the open sides to bring order to your entertaining space. One important suggestion Departures makes is to keep the hardscaping to a minimum: “so that it only covers the appliances and your dining area, so there’s more space for grass and curated areas for lounging and conversation.” INSTALL PERGOLAS AND CABANAS A pergola shaded with fast-growing ivy or grape vines can create a small, separate space that encourages quiet hours of reading or relaxation. Cabanas draped with flowing curtains will reveal glimpses of your lush plantings while still shielding you from prying eyes or distractions. Then fill the space with luxurious and ultra-comfortable indoor/ outdoor furniture and get ready to enjoy! Even working in the backyard will take on an element of relaxation when you can enjoy the warm breeze, fresh air, and shade as you type away.

HANG OUTDOOR CURTAINS Speaking of drapery, if you are trying to turn a bounded terrace or patio into an oasis, consider adding opaque outdoor curtains into the mix. You can hang them from porch roofs, add rods to overhangs, mount hardware onto pillars, or run them between wood or iron stakes that edge your space. The curtains help establish an elegant outdoor hideaway that allows for fresh air to flow and hides you away from neighbors. INTRODUCE HANGING PLANTS Hanging plants can offer vivid color and a sense of seclusion when suspended from pergolas, cabana posts, porch roofs, and patio wall brackets. Among Real Simple’s favorite plants to hang are mini petunias because “they never need deadheading and can take sun or a mix of sun and shade.” As the editors at Better Homes & Gardens confirm, “privacy extends beyond your sense of sight.” To complete your backyard oasis, “install an outdoor fountain, stream, or other water feature to muffle bothersome sounds.” While this is always a good idea, it is essential for suburban or urban dwellers who may need an escape from traffic noises, construction sounds, or the daily distractions that can interfere with relaxation and/or work. VICTORIAN GREENHOUSES

A Victorian greenhouse is typically made of glass which promotes the flow of natural light while creating a micro-climate conducive to the cultivation of any number of plants and trees, particularly tropical varieties. Luxurious Victorian models are made with cold frames of steel or timber and often feature walk-out patios and enough space to dine with friends among the fruit trees. Bespoke Victorian lodges, like those available through Hartley Botanic, may be small, but they are tailor- made for your garden space. Walk-out porches are simple add-ons to the design. The narrower glass panes of safety glass get high marks for durability – an important element to consider if you live in a region that experiences frequent storms. SMALL GLASS GREENHOUSES Not surprisingly, magazines like Southern Living cannot stop raving about the advantages of building greenhouses on patios, in gardens, or on terraces. Whether you commission a small glass model made of vintage windows or set out to build yourself one using their plans, Southern Living believes that your investment will be worth the money and effort. Among the reasons that the magazine is such a fan is that a greenhouse allows you to “start seeds earlier and control their temperature, which makes it possible to grow thriving plants that don’t usually flourish in the South, like citrus and orchids.” Using vintage windows grants you the ability to

control individual panes to guide the flow of air where it is needed most. Depending on the number of windows used, you can create a small, cozy space for letting your seedlings thrive or a spacious greenhouse that can be filled with racks of plants and a bistro table and chairs, perfect for sipping a glass of wine amongst the greenery. CONSERVATORY GREENHOUSES Also known as an “Italian Style Greenhouse,” a conservatory greenhouse features tempered security glass surrounded by ornate ironwork. Crafted by companies like Villa Dorica, Aphrodite models can feature tiled flooring, double-paned windows, and enough space to meet all of your gardening needs. This elegant greenhouse can also offer thermal insulation, allowing you to grow plants in even the harshest of winters. You’ll never have to worry about a sudden frost damaging your plants and derailing your early spring planting efforts. Customized here with a brilliant chandelier, conservatory models can also easily double as elegant entertainment spaces for garden parties, refined dinner engagements, or romantic date nights.

GUEST HOUSE GREENHOUSES

Do you have a back garden with an ideal spot for a secret retreat under the trees? Guest house greenhouses blend the timeless style of a sustainable wood and glass model with the elegance of a small hideaway. One of Better Homes & Gardens ’ favorite greenhouses boasts an outdoor room large enough for a cozy day bed, pretty shelving, stunning pots for herbs and greenery, and an attached outdoor shower. Plans for complete bathrooms, mini-kitchens, and loft spaces can all be added as you customize this charming, character-forward guest house greenhouse with “materials that suit your personality, your yard, and your climate.” POTTING SHED GREENHOUSES If you prefer a greenhouse that provides more privacy and wood-shingled charm, you might want to consider designing your own potting shed greenhouse, another favorite of the team at Better Homes & Gardens . As the magazine raves, “south-facing windows bathe the interior of the structure in light for potting projects (and plant propagation),” and the “open front porch makes the shed look like a tiny house.” Air flows through the greenhouse shed via easy-to-open doors and windows, but the space is also comfortably protected from the elements. Adding a

climate control system, particularly in areas of the country that experience long periods of extreme weather, would be relatively simple with this picturesque yet functional design. APARTMENTTERRACE GREENHOUSES Envy-inducing greenhouses are not just for properties with extensive back gardens. Urban dwellers can enjoy the benefits too. In fact, small greenhouses are an in-demand feature for apartment terraces, as those living in cities are also eager to embrace the victory gardening movement. Even the editors of Martha Stewart Living are huge fans of the mini-greenhouse trend, as they “come in all shapes, sizes and price points, and run the gambit from fuss-free and functional, to whimsical and ornamental,” making them flexible enough to appeal to any design aesthetic. If your terrace benefits from ample sun, and you yearn to put your green thumb to the test, it may be time to invest in a beautiful, small greenhouse.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS

The historic eastern road area is quite possibly the most charming area of Nassau. This stretch of road is home to colorful Colonial architecture and has traces of the entire Bahamian history, from ruins of old forts and houses hidden in the tropical undergrowth to sprawling colonial and modern mansions on hilltops and shorelines. Early governors of the Bahamas had their distinguished summer homes here to avoid the heat of the city. Many are still in use. Residents of this area can admire spectacular shades of the sunrise and sunsets over the sea. The eastern end of Nassau is a prime location for Bahamian real estate and remains one of the most prestigious addresses in the Bahamas. This area is home to a beautiful boater's paradise; Port New Providence. Residents of this exclusive community enjoy the beach, canal, marina, tennis courts, clubhouse, playground, tastefully landscaped grounds including a duck

pond and 24-hr. security. The deep-water canal allows large vessels to be docked directly in your backyard, and the close proximity to the Out Islands offers an unmatched level of convenience for residents who love island hopping to the Out Islands for the weekend. You cannot visit the Bahamas without going to the beach; even if you are not a beach lover, the beautiful blues will take your breath away. Some attractions you must see while visiting, include Clifton Heritage National Park, the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas and Arawak Cay. If you are in the mood for an off-island excursion, Blue Lagoon Island or a day trip to Exuma to see the swimming pigs should be on your list of things to do. Lastly, the Atlantis and Baha Mar Resorts are filled with great activities, dining and entertainment options for a diverse crowd.
