PERFECTLY MATCH MEALS WITH THE RIGHT WINE Before you begin playing with food and wine combinations, keep three ideas in mind. Perfect pairing matches weight with weight. Food and wine intensities should be in harmony. Aromatics of properly paired food and wine agree with each other. Depending on a food or wine, one of these ideals may need to take precedence over another. The goal, however, is to achieve overall balance. As an example, you might pair a full-bodied pasta dish with an un-oaked full-bodied chardonnay. Oily plates should have companion wines with heavy tannins. Spicy dishes go well with sweet wines, bringing both flavors toward neutral. Harmonizing the meal is key, and sometimes it takes a bit of practice to get it right. PAIRING WINE WITH SPICY FOODS Spicy foods like curries, intense Thai dishes, gumbos and kimchi require a low alcohol, sweet wine. Think of a Riesling, gamay Beaujolais, chenin blanc or petite sirah. If you pair spicy dishes with high tannin wines like a merlot or cabernet, you’ll experience a dry palate with too much alcohol and heat. A sauvignon blanc is a superb wine to pair with Asian foods, as is a great Gewürztraminer.

GOURMET CUISINE
WINE TO PAIR WITH STARCHY FOODS Starchy, fibrous foods like bready dishes, pastas and potato-based meals pair best based on the seasonings or sauce used. Consider a medium-acid wine with light fruit tannins and a bit of body. A foolproof food and wine pairing might be an oven-baked red onion, garlic and spinach pizza on whole-wheat crust, with an un-oaked Italian pinot grigio. Or, a rosemary potato gratin with a light merlot. WINE PAIRINGS FOR ACIDIC FOODS Meals made with citrus, tomatoes and even eggplant, which are all acidic foods, pair well with high-acidity wines. For paella, lemon and herb rice dishes and baked eggplant entrées, go with a pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc, Grenache or zinfandel. Even a sangiovese or cabernet sauvignon is sensational with acidic fare. FATTY FOODS AND WINE PAIRINGS Meals that are heavy on fatty ingredients like olive oil and avocado should partner with medium-bodied, soft-tannin wines. The tannins will slightly dry out the palate, which is preferable when there’s considerable oiliness to a dish. With an olive oil or avocado pasta, try a syrah, merlot, chardonnay or soft-tannin cabernet.
WINE AND NUTS Nut-based dishes, such as gourmet nut cheese boards and nut pâté find balance with dry sparkling wines. Pair an Italian white like a pinot grigio, or a cava from Spain, with nutty appetizers and entrées. Sherry is a delightful wine for nut-based main dishes, such as an almond vegetable stew. ROOT VEGETABLE AND BEAN PAIRINGS Dense pinot noirs compliment root vegetable and bean recipes perfectly. A carrot bisque or a plate of black bean enchiladas go with a hearty wine from California’s central coast. You might also choose a field blend from a Northern California winery. AND MUSHROOMS Earthy foods like green vegetables and mushrooms pair exceptionally well with French syrahs, verdant pinot noirs and tempranillos. Find an herbaceous wine like a Sancerre or a Chablis for a menu of portabello and poblano fajitas along with sautéed chard. Rosé can be a beautiful partner to a green vegetable dish, such as a green bean risotto. PAIRINGS FOR GREEN VEGETABLES
PAIRING WINE WITH SWEETS
It’s simple to remember which wines to pair with sweets. Go for a vintage that’s sweeter than your dessert and you’ll be more than fine. You can stick with the classic pairing of cabernet and chocolate, and chardonnay and apples is always a great choice. But generally, just opt for a port, riesling or Sauternes to enjoy an absolutely decadent addition to dessert. careful about choosing organic food ingredients. Wine grapes can be heavily sprayed with pesticides, so think about purchasing from wineries that use healthy, earth-friendly and biodynamic production methods. Girasole makes extraordinary organic wines and Cantina Pizzolato produces sulfite-free wines. A note for food and wine pairings: consider looking for organic wines if you’re already

PICK A FAMILIAR THEME
DECIDE ON DÉCOR How you decorate your table sets the tone for the courses to come. Lay down your finest tablecloth and bring out real plates, glasses and silver. Guests should feel as though you are giving them a genuine encounter to expand their joy of living. Centerpieces should also be of the season. Rather than using seasonal blooms, arrange herbs such as oregano, thyme, rosemary and lavender in a pleasing display. Take care not to use scented candles that detract from the meal. Votive candles create a welcoming atmosphere, as do taper candles. Light the way to your meal with lanterns placed on the porch, in the foyer or on garden paths to instill a sense of culinary adventure. Each course should be distinct. Traditional French feasts have nine courses: cold hors d'oeuvres , soup, fish or seafood, the entrée, cold dish or salad, cheese, dessert, fruit and coffee. Some hosts forego formality by only serving an appetizer, the entrée and dessert. The number, of course, is up to you. Guests should not fill up on the appetizer to leave the entrée on their cooling plates. Instead, serve each course by itself. Guests should have their plates served by someone who is aware that the flavors of the varying courses are not to be mixed. Separate dishes to honor the refined palates of your guests. There should be no passing of plates to ensure that the aromas are not blending and hiding the beauty of your carefully prepared meal. DO NOT PASS TO YOUR LEFT
Every single detail must be considered and fit in with the themes of the evening’s affair. You may serve traditional dishes or ones that have a fusion bent, but presentation is key. Party planning must always start with creating a theme. A dinner event centers on food and must be carefully considered. Start with country or regional specialties. Italian is always a top choice, as are French or Spanish food. Guests generally prefer to eat what they know. If planning on offering unexpected pairings, such as an apple and jalapeno chutney, it might be best to serve them as side dishes to avoid leaving guests with the impression that they have nothing to eat. Themes can center on times of the year. A Mardi Gras celebration, fetes to honor equinoxes, or a Valentine’s Day love letter to food will allow guests to know which gifts to bring and a general sense of the foods they will be eating. Even better is to… ALLOWTHE SEASONS TO LEAD THEWAY Nature was designed to give the spotlight to certain fruits and vegetables during certain times of the year. Truffles and fresh olive oil are the stars of November, while artichokes have to wait until March for their day in the sun. Dinner parties should be a rite of passion dedicated to in-season delicacies. Commit to using locally grown foods that will demonstrate your eco-consciousness and give your feast the opportunity to be remembered for how fresh everything was.

HAVE A SYMPOSIUM Conversation is second only to the food at a dinner party. Encourage guests to turn off their phones, or collect them in a basket to ensure everyone is fully present. Once everyone is done eating, introduce a topic of general interest. Given the leanings and personalities of your guests some topics, such as politics and religion, should be avoided. Ask guests to share their opinion, honoring those that are abstaining, and create a discussion where your attendees feel that their opinion is being honored. FOLLOW UP Guests who were thoughtful enough to bring a gift should be recognized with a handwritten thank you card. The general rule is that cards should be postmarked no more than three days after receiving the gesture. Make sure to specify why their gift was so fitting for the occasion and your future uses for it. Of course, if the gift consisted of edibles, show your gratitude by expressing how much you enjoyed each bite. In return, guests will take on even more favorable feelings toward your party and RSVP gladly for future ones.

transform your home INTO A ZEN RETREAT: with a meditation room
Modern life includes the din of traffic and seemingly nonstop chatter from ubiquitous cell phones. The drive to maximize every second of the day has left many anxious and unfilled. Luxury homes are filled with designer kitchens to make feasts and garages that are playrooms for car enthusiasts. Many of us have forgotten how to enjoy the present moment in full. Regardless of religion or philosophy, a meditation room is a must for any modern home.

DREAMYDÉCOR The absolute first thing that shouldbe done in your zen space is uncluttering. Meditation rooms are supposed to clear themindof noise and ego. Having toomany things in this space is counterproductive. Design your zenby findingwhat speaks to you. The four elements –water, earth, fire and air – can be starting points of what to include. Break with tradition andpaint the ceiling. Evoke harmony by using a soothing palette such as light blues and greens. Another safe option is touse only neutrals. Add tactile elements such as faux fur pillows or shag rugs. Welcome flowers and stones as natural accents. Many believe that a zen space shouldhave at least one sitting, laughing or recliningBuddha; followwhatmakes sense for you. Any figurine that evokes peaceful thoughts shouldbe included. Meditation rooms should apply the same focus. In selecting a space, consider views andnoise levels. Choose a space that is away fromstreets, pools and the garage. The view is crucial if not closing the eyes to focus on the breath. A guest homewouldbe ideal if converted. Libraries could alsobe of service, aswell as solariums. Look for spaces in your home that overlook lakes, beaches or mountains. Views of the ninthhole are fine, as are your gardens. If all these spaces are taken, select an inspiring piece of wall art to gaze upon as you relax. At the least, look for calming influences and enough space todo a fewyogaposes if desired. THE PERFECT LOCATION In real estate, location is everything.

SEATING Abedwelcomes sleep into your
consciousness, but a full bed is not ideal for ameditation space. Daybeds are perfect if there are any physical issueswith sitting still for long periods of time. They allowyou to recline comfortablywithout leaning all the way back. Many practitioners usemeditation pillows that are filledwithbuckwheat for stability. Throwat least one pillowon the groundor the designated seating area for optimal comfort. If choosing to forego pillows, rugs are a great alternative. Choose the size depending onwhether youwant to relax or loungewhenunwinding. Anopen airmeditation spacewouldbe sensational withmultiple sofas inneutral shades. Chaise lounges andbeanbagswould alsobring relaxation into your zen space.
The best way to achieve soothing illumination is to layer your lighting options, such as lamps, throughout the space to achieve balance and symmetry. Playwith lights and shadows in your space. All lights shouldbeondimmers andat several levels of the room. Fairy lights canbe strung—either horizontally or vertically—to illuminate your internal retreat. This option alsoworks as they aremovable and canbe arranged to suit creative impulses. Pendant lights and chandeliers can alsobe hung as long as they are not directly overhead. For an authentic touch, use rice paper lanterns. While some designers encourage the use of candles in candelabras or fireplaces, decide your level of comfort andalertness before placing themin your personal escape. FLOORING Hardwoodfloors are preferred for a zen room. Not only are theyminimalist chic, they are also enduring and canhandle any foot traffic of wandering lovedones. Oak and cherrywoodwill add style to your space, but first and foremost, consider the designof the room. Open spaces canwelcome darker tones likemaple. Compact spacesmay farewell with teak, the flooring of choice in numerous Asian countries.
RELAXING LIGHTING
An idealmediation spacewouldhave a great windowor skylight to connect you to your dreams. However, if not renovating, light fixtures canbe apractical way to create a serenemoodwith a flick of a switch.

the best ways to preserve DELICATE FINE CHINA from Better Homes and Gardens® By Jessica Bennett When the big event is over, and it's time to put everything away, take care to ensure your china collection stays table-ready. The holidays are prime time to get out the "good" china.Whether you invested in your own collection or inherited a set from a family member, these treasured pieces make setting the table feel extra special. But once guests have gone home, putting it all away isn't as simple as stacking everything in a cabinet or stowing it into a cardboard box.

LIFE & LEISURE
PROTECTYOUR MOST TREASURED PIECES Fine china is more fragile than regular dinnerware and often includes intricate details, like gold rimming, hand-painted patterns and delicate glazes. To keep your collection safe and ready for the next special occasion, follow these china storage tips in between each use.
STORE PIECES IN STURDY CONTAINERS
Instead of flimsy cardboard boxes, pack china in sturdy, structured containers that aren't easily dented or crushed. Opt for hard-sided cases to protect dishes on all sides. A heavy-duty banker's box or sturdy gift box can also work. Be sure to line the interior with felt for extra cushion.
CHOOSE A LOW-TRAFFIC STORAGE SPOT
You don't want to jostle past your fine china every time you reach for a cereal bowl. Choose a storage spot that's out of the way to reduce the risk of damaging the pieces during your daily routine. A separate storage cabinet or hutch is ideal, but if you don't have one, a spare shelf in your linen closet or a plastic bin in the basement can work fine. Just pay attention to temperature. "The cold or heat in attics and garages can crack the glazes," says Julie Robbins, product specialist at Replacements, Ltd., a favorite source for buying and repairing vintage china.
DISPLAY CHINA WITH CARE
Think twice about displaying treasured heirlooms on open shelves, which leave your china susceptible to collecting dust or getting knocked over. A glass-front cabinet or hutch is one of the best ways to protect china from dust while still showing it off. To display plates upright, fit the edges into the built-in grooves on shelves, or purchase individual stands for each plate. Don't crowd the shelves to prevent pieces from bumping into each other.
SEPARATE AND STACK CHINA SAFELY
Wherever you decide to store china, take care to stack items safely. "Always place a coffee filter or piece of felt between pieces so they don't scratch each other," Robbins says. And never stack plates or bowls more than 10 high. "The weight can actually damage pieces on the bottom," Robbins says.

PROTECT TEACUPS Teacups might look pretty when hung up on hooks, but this puts excess pressure on the handle, which is often the vessel's weakest point. Additionally, although storing cups upside down reduces dust buildup, this can easily result in knicks or scratches around the rim. For the safest storage method, display teacups right side up on a shelf or pack them away carefully with plenty of cushioning.

INTERIOR DESIGN
implementing SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES when decorating your home Concerns about global warming and the overall health of the planet are growing. As a result, environmentally-friendly interior design is trending, with homeowners looking toward their own practices and how they can contribute to the Earth’s health at home.

INTERIOR DESIGN
GREEN INTERIORS Implementing sustainable practices in the way you decorate your home can impact your carbon footprint and keep excess pollution out of our air, water and landfills. Plus, turning toward “green” design can improve your overall health and well-being. The primary focus on eco-friendly design at home strives to improve indoor air quality and reduce the impact that major purchase can have on the environment. And by starting at home, environmentally-friendly interior design sets a positive precedent, expanding out to the larger world. Consider the following areas of your home when you start your eco-friendly interior re-design to improve the air quality inside your home and your piece of the Earth outside it. Solid wood furniture, like walnut, teak, oak or maple, will last longer and be more durable, ensuring that it will last longer in your home. Additionally, look for sustainable hardwoods that rely on traditional building and joinery methods, think tongue-and-groove-joints, rather than glues. The chemicals in adhesives can off gas VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, into the air, which affects the air quality in your home. Traditional Home recommends looking for antiques. “These pieces are the ultimate in being ‘green’” because they were created from old growth forests without modern glues or chemicals for staining. Additionally, antiques can be an eye-catching addition to any room, even the most contemporary, and make that home feel unique. LONG-LASTING FURNITURE
AVOID CHEMICALS IN UPHOLSTERY AND TEXTILES Like the glues and stains on modern furniture, fabrics can also off-gas potentially harmful irritants into the air. Consider organic materials when recovering furniture or selecting curtains. The flame retardants in many upholstery fabrics include formaldehyde, polyurethane, doxin and brominated flame retardants. These unnecessary additives can be harsh on sensitive eyes and lungs. Select organic cottons, wools or silks that are labeled organic to avoid the chemicals and side effects. Consider organic, also, when you shop for a rug for your home. Synthetic rugs are often made of nylon, acetate or polyester, which are all words for plastics. If your rug ends up in a landfill, and wall-to-wall carpeting often does after it has run its course, then those materials don’t biodegrade, creating more waste. Wall paints are another carrier of VOCs. When you smell paint after it has been applied, you are experiencing the off gassing of the paint’s chemicals. But even when that fresh-paint smell disappears, off gassing may still occur. Look for paint labels that read “low odor” or “low VOC.” Natural, water-based paints will help to eliminate the chemicals that affect your interior environment, and you can still select any color you’d like to paint your walls. WATER-BASED PAINT IS BEST

USETHE RIGHT LIGHTING
NATURAL ACCENTS If your home is built using environmentally-friendly practices, and you have consciously chosen eco-materials to support our planet, then you might consider decorating with natural accents and finishing touches. Consider using salvaged wood or materials to construct a coffee or accent table. Repurpose glass jars into light fixtures. Or find recycled bricks to add character to outdoor walls or garden paths. Naturally occurring materials also make beautiful and decorative accents. Look for beautiful stones, shells and driftwood to catch eyes and create interest in your home. According to Midwest Living , these touches, “all add life to manufactured decor.” Make the move toward environmentally practices when you consider your home’s interior design. By looking at interior design with an eco-conscious approach, you are supporting the health of your family and the entire planet.
Rely on natural light whenever you can. Energy efficient windows and doors can set the tone for an entire house and help to bring the outdoors in. But at night, avoid incandescent bulbs that can drain energy quickly. Instead, consider relying a low voltage system and fluorescent or halogen bulbs that efficiently convert most of the energy produced into light. These are available in a wide array of tones and hues, so you can match your preferred light color, such as daylight, soft white light, warm light, and more, for each room.

INTERIOR DESIGN
BOOKSHELVES One absolute library essential is
bookshelves. They can be made of wood, metal or anything you can imagine as long as it is sturdy. They can go horizontal or vertical– anything goes! Many bibliophiles seek out tradition and use the floor-to ceiling shelved design that is a hallmark of Oxford’s prized library. There is another way to house books that is a modernized take on the classic. Turn your book collection on its ear with beautiful shelves built on a diagonal. By turning your book collection in a new direction, you introduce a bold, geometric pattern that foregoes the need to include wall art and makes your shrine to the written word into the focal point of interest. If your layout does not permit you to build across, go vertical and build skywards. Custom touches can include velvet lining or intricately carved details. Whether stretching across new literary horizons or reaching toward the heavens, link the color of the rest of the room to the color of the shelves.
LIGHTING Illuminating a library is tricky, especially if your collection has rare books that require special housing. Those delicate pages and spines must avoid direct sunlight and unstable temperatures. Natural light through windows or skylights should be filtered with drapes or blinds to avoid bleaching your precious collection. Explore other options such as recessed lighting, which allows you to take advantage of any space in the ceiling and walls for a glow rather than a spotlight. Lamps placed throughout your library ensure that each reader will receive ample lighting to avoid straining their eyes. Get creative and install chandeliers or wall sconces for a dramatic look. Set the right mood for reading with downlights atop bookshelves, or highlight your collection with track lighting or in-shelf puck lights. For a truly optimal mood enhancer, include a fireplace that will not only light your library but provide heat as well.

INTERIOR DESIGN
FLOORING To let your books really shine, make your floors stand out. Hardwood flooring is ideal for this space. It allows for a streamlined look and classic style. Any type of wood frommaple to oak will add a touch of rustic glamour. Brick floors may be too cold, but possible with the right rugs. Wall-to-wall carpet may reduce noise, but style should be a top consideration, especially when enticing non-book lovers to visit your sanctuary. Sometimes the best way to bring out what you have on your walls is through what you put on the floor. Rugs are a great way to add interest to your book haven. Black and white rugs can fit with any color palette. Neutral rugs can accentuate the colors lining the bookshelves. Consider adding color in the mix to brighten the space or to match with a dominant color showcased on your shelves.
FURNITURE The pieces you use in your library will determine its feeling and style. With bookshelves, lighting and flooring taken into consideration, seating and tables must be arranged. The type of seating you use will largely be determined by how long you plan on actually reading in your library. If it is more of a showpiece or an entertaining space for shorter periods of time, opt for style over comfort. You can use accent chairs or ones that will be noted for their design rather than comfort. If planning on spending extended periods of time in your library, select sofas and lounges that prioritize relaxation. After all, a library can be of any design you choose, but it should also be as functional as possible. Weigh in on adding tables or desks for studying. A coffee table allows for certain books to receive extra special attention. May every book be your favorite and may you have everything you have ever wanted in a library.

ideas for your next ADVENTURE TRAVEL VACATION Vacation no longer has to fit into the perfect bundle of a beach with ocean breezes and swaying palms. It doesn’t mean hours lounging in a chaise while waves crash, and it doesn’t mean luxury dinners in a fine dining restaurant or a quiet evening in resort hotel rooms. Modern vacations are so much more active, busy and full-throttle.

TRAVEL
EXPLORE MORE Adventure travel has become the go-to method of vacationing, and it includes excitement and thrills, exotic destinations and never tried before foods. It is for the curious, the dare devil and the envelope pusher. If that’s you, then read on. Adventure tourism has grown in recent years because of the increased connectivity of the world. If adventurers can stay connected to work or home while they explore the farthest corners of the Earth, then they are more likely to go. Plus, adventures shared over social media inspire other would-be travelers to book their own excursions. Inspired by this bold travel style, hotel and tour operators have increased their adventure offerings and embraced this movement.
LUXURY ADVENTURE
But what is adventure travel? When you think about adventure travel, you are likely considering outdoor adventures. Hiking, biking, walking, climbing, paddling are all covered under the umbrella. Gaining experiences, trying something new, crossing off a bucket-list item are all motivators for adventurer travelers, and so they go far and wide to do anything. Adventure travel is always active, but it can also be quite luxurious, and that duality is a huge part of the appeal. Consider exploring the Serengeti by Jeep, and then cozying up under the stars next to a fire pit and your luxury tent with a feather bed and climate control. Or SCUBA dive through Fiji while sailing aboard a luxurious catamaran sail boat with a private captain and chef. The opportunities for both adventure and luxury are limitless when you consider the reaches of the globe and all that is possible. Both seasoned and novice explorers and adventurers will discover something that will spark their curiosity and make their heart beat a little faster. The following list of adventure travel experiences are a great place to start planning your next trip.

TRAVEL
DISCOVER THE WORLD ON A LUXURY RIVER CRUISE Gain a perspective that you can only get when you take a river cruise. Landscapes slide past as rivers roll through untouched forests, beautiful landscapes, uninhabited deserts. Cities come alive from their waterfronts. Regional cuisine helps to define culture and give visitors a taste of the area. Plus, traveling by river makes traditional landmarks and attractions accessible by stopping at ports of call in the heart of the most famous cities in the world. River cruises can also boast about their intimate experiences. Open-ocean cruises rely on huge ships with thousands of passengers. But when you reserve a river cruise, you are committing to traveling with only a few hundred people. When you get off the boat in a port of call, you aren’t swarmed with other passengers all trying to get into the same attractions. And fewer passengers also means more personalized service on board. River cruise boats offer a full luxury experience. With fine dining, beautiful and private accommodations with boutique style décor, your time on the cruise boat will not be forgotten. You will be able to relax completely while experiencing a one-in-a lifetime vacation.
EUROPE Traveling through Europe’s famous rivers, visitors can see history unfold. Famous river tours include trips on the Danube, Rhine or Seine rivers. The most famous cities these cruises visit are dripping with beautiful architecture that dates from as far back as the Middle Ages. Plus, the steady and slow pace ensures that you truly explore any city you visit. European cruise providers are including luxury amenities on board and professional tours in port. Companies like Avalon Waterways has expanded their fleet and offerings ensuring your river cruise is exactly what you want it to be.
THE UNITED STATES With rivers like the mighty Mississippi, Snake and Hudson, river cruises across the United States offer views you will not experience on any road trip. Set sail the length of the Mississippi River aboard a traditional river cruise boat, or try something more authentic like one of American Queen’s paddlewheelers or steam boat. High traffic areas of the Mississippi offer views of cities like Nashville or New Orleans and specialty tours that focus the area’s history or culture. American Queen offers themed cruises that focus on subjects like Mark Twain, the area’s unique bourbons or Blues music and culture. Or cruises through the Pacific North West and Alaska on American Cruise Lines explore the rugged beauty and wildlife of the region.

TRAVEL
ASIA Plan a luxury river cruise through
unexpected destinations. River cruises have expanded to rivers like the Ganges in India or Yangtze in China or Vietnam, Cambodia and the Mekong Delta. And the ships that travel these routes, like Viking Cruises or Uniworld, are some of the most luxurious. These routes offer an unbeatable experience as you learn about the region’s culture, traditions and wildlife. India’s Golden Triangle offers views of the Taj Mahal and the Raj Ghat, a black granite memorial to Gandhi. Or you can explore China’s long and storied history afloat on the Yangtze River that floats past panda bears, misty mountains and bamboo groves, creating a sense of peace and calm, surrounded by history.
AFRICA Beginning in Cairo, a river cruise down the Nile offers visitors a combination of river and air travel to see sights like King Tutankhamun’s tomb and the Valley of the Kings. The result is a dramatic and beautiful river cruise perfect for those who want to combine ancient history and ultimate luxury. Uniworld, Viking and Avalon all offer Nile River cruises. Start planning a luxury river cruise vacation to one of the world’s top destinations, and prepare yourself for an experience unlike any other.
